Phoenix Thornhill died in the wee hours of the morning December 22, 2005. He was 27.
He was going to spend Christmas at his mother's house three states away. On his way out of town late Wednesday night, he stopped at my best friend's house to get something and say goodbye. He was happy and excited about the trip. Twenty minutes later, he was hit by a drunk driver going the wrong way on the freeway. The impact ignited a fire and he was dead within minutes.
Phoenix and I weren't close, but my closest friend loved him dearly and spent three years of her life with him. In the end, that's what matters -- that he was loved. I hope he lives a better life next time. I hope we all live better lives next time.
